Argentina is a wonderland for nature enthusiasts. The eighth-largest country in the world ranges from cosmopolitan cities to wide-open plains, to gaping glaciers, to snow-capped peaks, to lush wetland groves, so there is a lot to explore. There are many activities that you can experience when visiting Argentina.

Four of the best experiences that the country has to offer:

See the glaciers

Argentina’s close proximity to Antarctica, as well as its Patagonia region of South America, means this country has no shortage of glaciers to explore. In fact, with more than 300 glaciers to choose from, it’s one of the main reasons people visit Argentina.

The country boasts some of the largest glaciers on the continent, many of them lying in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Glacier National Park.

One of the most famous is the Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park just outside the town of El Calafate in the country’s southwest. It’s one of few glaciers that grow rather than shrinks, expanding by up to two metres per day and it is also said to hold the third-largest reserve of freshwater in the world.

There are some technical pieces of equipment you definitely will need when hiking the glaciers, so make sure you do your research when packing your bag.

Iguazu Falls

Located in Iguazu National Park, is Iguazu Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage. Located amongst a rainforest, the falls form a natural border between Brazil and Argentina; it is no wonder it is one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

The Iguazu Falls are not your average waterfall; it’s a compilation of 275 different cascades that spans nearly 3 kilometres in length, making it Argentina’s must-see places. The most notable attraction is Devil’s Throat, standing at a staggering 80m, it is the second-highest falls in the world.

Hiking

The hikes in Patagonia are some of the best in the world. One place not to miss is the mountain village of El Chalten, in the Patagonian Andes. Sitting on the border of Chile and Argentina are the mountains Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, both are perfect for climbing and hiking.

The most popular is the Laguna de Los Tres trail. The 20km hike leads through stunning valleys and forests, past glaciers, lagoons and glacier lakes and yields spectacular views of the peak.

As you’ll be spending most of your time on your feet exploring in Argentina, it’s always best to invest in a good pair of hiking shoes that can weather any storm.
